Hearing Loss In Children

How Hearing Loss Affects Their Lives

Early diagnosis and intervention of hearing loss in infants and children can significantly impact a child’s speech and language development as well as social and emotional health.

Our Audiology staff is highly skilled in the early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss in children of all ages. In fact, Constance Brown Hearing Centers is one of only 17 Certified Centers of Excellence in Michigan for Pediatric Audiology. You can trust that the care your child receives with us is the best.

DID YOU KNOW? 6 out of every 1,000 babies have a significant hearing problem at birth and that most babies born with hearing loss have no signs or symptoms.

Newborn Hearing Screening

It is now estimated that 95% of babies born deaf have parents with normal hearing. Scheduling an appointment to evaluate your child’s hearing is the first step. All Michigan birthing hospitals provide hearing screening for newborns. Not all babies pass an initial hearing screening. Sometimes a baby may be discharged before the hearing screening can be completed. When this happens, a follow-up hearing screening is recommended.

It is important to follow through with the recommendations of the hearing screening. Early identification is the goal of newborn hearing screening programs. If a hearing loss is found, early intervention for your child can start right away.
