Hearing sound is a very important aspect of daily life. Thus when one suffers from hearing loss, it can negatively affect daily life. It makes communicating difficult because the sufferer misunderstands communication. A patient of Constance Brown Hearing Centers once shared “My wife said to me, in regards to a trip we were about to take ‘We have to leave within the hour’ and I said back to her ‘I already took a shower.’” Another past patient complained saying “I was missing cues at work. . . . I could not understand what was being said in sales meetings.”
Beyond isolating people from others, hearing loss isolates us from the world around us. Another patient Bill W. vividly remembers the first few days after he was fitted with his new Behind the Ear (BTE) aids. It was early November and the snow had yet to fall. “I remember hearing the crunching of leaves as I walked around outside. I hadn’t heard that sound in 15 years.” His wife Linda described him as a giddy school child “He would be dropping tooth picks and pens and so overjoyed by the sound.”
Besides one being isolated, hearing loss often causes heightened stress and there is strong evidence to suggest that the hearing loss sufferer actually will earn less money than one who does not suffer from hearing loss. What is more, among those seeking work, the unemployment rate is 50 percent higher for people with hearing loss than for people without.
And finally hearing loss can lead to fatigue. A Danish study reported among hearing impaired respondents, 47 percent suffer from mental exhaustion as compared to 36 percent among the general population, and 51 percent complained of occasional physical exhaustion as compared to 31 percent among the general population.
The good news is that there is hope for one suffering from hearing loss . If you would like to schedule an appointment or find out more, click here.
